Limoges porcelain hand painted boxes date back from the time of Royal France, 1700s. A 22 year old woman of non noble origin approached the Court of Louis XV and was give the title of Marquise de Pompadour. She was very different from all the other courtesans the King had due to her common origin. Of impeccable education and charming beauty and character she made the palace of Versailles her home. During her 20 years at the court of Versailles she protected the biggest artists and thinkers of her time. She did reconcile the French philosopher Voltaire with the King and made the project of the “ Encyclopedie” from Diderot possible. She commissioned the best painters of her time : Georges La Tour, Francois Boucher and Jean- Francois Oeben.
Jeanne Antoinette Poisson was one of the most influential women in the history of the arts and the court of France.
